Ever find yourself stuck in a loop, doing the same thing over and over, even when it’s not working? Or maybe you’ve set goals, made plans, but can’t seem to follow through? It all comes down to how your brain operates—and there’s good news. Once you understand this, you can start shifting things to get different results.
Let’s dive into the three brain systems that influence how you behave and make decisions every day.
The Reptilian Brain: Instinct in Action
The reptilian brain is the most primal part of your brain. It’s responsible for survival—fight, flight, or freeze responses. When you’re on autopilot, reacting instead of thinking, that’s your reptilian brain kicking in. It’s there to keep you safe, but it’s not great at helping you make thoughtful, long-term decisions.
Have you ever found yourself making a quick decision out of fear or urgency, only to realize later it wasn’t the best move? That’s your reptilian brain doing what it’s wired to do.
Quick Question: What situations trigger you to react out of fear or habit instead of pausing to consider your options?
The Limbic Brain: Emotions at Play
Next up is the limbic brain, where your emotions live. It’s responsible for things like connection, pleasure, and memories. Your limbic brain drives decisions based on feelings—what you enjoy, what you avoid, and how you relate to others.
Have you ever made a decision purely because it “felt right” or stayed stuck in a cycle because change felt too uncomfortable? That’s the limbic brain doing its job. But while emotions are important, they can sometimes cloud your ability to see things clearly.
Quick Question: When have your emotions led you to make decisions you weren’t fully aligned with?
The Neocortex: The Thinker
Finally, we have the neocortex—your thinking brain. This is where logic, planning, and creativity happen. It’s where you make long-term decisions, weigh pros and cons, and strategize. But here’s the thing: you can’t always think your way through everything. Sometimes the neocortex overanalyzes and keeps you stuck in planning mode, without moving into action.
Do you find yourself coming up with great ideas but never fully executing them? You’ve got all the plans but struggle with follow-through? That’s the neocortex spinning its wheels.
Quick Question: How can you shift from overthinking into taking aligned action on your goals?
How Your Coach Helps You Navigate All Three
Your coach isn’t here to tell you which brain system you’re using, but we see it. We notice when you’re stuck in survival mode, when emotions are pulling you in one direction, or when you’re getting caught up in overthinking. The goal is to help you engage all three systems in a balanced way—so you can make decisions that align with the life, career, or business you want for yourself.
Imagine what it would be like to take purposeful action, backed by emotion and logic, while keeping your instincts in check. That’s the sweet spot we work toward in coaching.
Quick Question: Where in your life, career, or business do you feel imbalanced in your decision-making?
